The Pia Gateway was one of four main entrances to the medieval city that formed the base structure to the tower that guarded it. It is the only gateway to retain some of its original components such as its hinges and the guide rail for the portcullis. The name of the gateway is derived from its proximity to the judaic ritual bathhouse known as “la pila”. It was at The Pía Gateway that the bishops of Tui sanctioned the daily habits and customs of the city.
